Bengaluru has a rich breakfast tradition centered around Darshinis. Darshinis provide quick, affordable & healthy food for the average Bengaluru resident. The informal setup and consistent taste is what draws people to it regularly. Some of the popular dishes include kesari bhath, khara bhath, Idly-Vada-Sambhar, Masala Dosa and Frothy Filter Coffee. As we indulge in the Darshini food we will trace its history and talk about the culture around it.
Another food insitution of Bengaluru are its famed bakeries. The first Iyengar bakery started in 1896 when a regular customer at a sweet shop decided to teach the owner how to bake. Bakeries blossomed in the 20th century and started experimenting with a variety of offerings. We will taste some delicious stuffed puffs and breads that are unique to Bengaluru.
The tea shops in muslim neighbourhoods of Bengaluru are also a must visit. On top of the list is the delicious Sulemani Chai & Baked Sweet bread. These tea shops are place where people in the community gather through the day and engage in conversations. With a visit to a tea shop we will end our food tour.
